MSD has announced that it is discontinuing the manufacture and supply of estradiol 25mg and 50mg implants. The decision was based on two main factors:

  • Therapeutic alternatives are available in the UK, including patches, gels, and vaginal tablets or a vaginal ring, in addition to oral systemic preparations.
  • Cost-effective manufacturing processes are unsustainable because few countries use the implant formulation.

Treatment should be continued until a discussion can take place between the patient and their prescriber.
